August 05, 2015 VARANASI: The Prime Minister Narendra Modi while launching the first National Handloom Day in Chennai on August 7 would also view the event organised in his own parliamentary constituency Varanasi through live telecast.

"While the live telecast of the launching ceremony of the first National Handloom Day in Chennai will be viewed by the Kashi's weavers, the programme organised here at the Weavers Service Centre would also be seen in Chennai," said the deputy director of Weavers Training Centre Tapan Sharma.

Following the requests from several quarters, the central government decided to declare August 7 as National Handloom Day to be observed throughout the country every year beginning from 2015. The PM will launch the Day at a function in Chennai on August 7, when Sant Kabir Awards and National Awards for the years 2012, 2013 and 2014 will be awarded. A new 'India Handloom' brand for better market positioning of quality handloom products would also be launched on the occasion.

Observance of National Handloom Day would generate awareness about the importance of handloom industry as a part of country's rich heritage and culture, promote handloom products and lead to increase in income of weavers as well as enhance their confidence and pride. According to records, over 43 lakh persons are engaged in handloom weaving and allied activities in India as per the last handloom census. This industry is a source of livelihood to large section of rural population particularly women, and BPL families, in addition to this being a part of the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the country.

All state governments have been requested to arrange celebration of this day all over the country by encouraging active participation of all segments of the society. "In Varanasi the event will be attended by national awardees, master weavers, and people associated with handloom sector," Sharma told to TOI adding that pre and post handloom weaving activities would be demonstrated on the occasion.

"It will be a valuable gist to the millions of handloom weavers," said Rajni Kant, director of Human Welfare Association and state coordinator of SAREL (State Alliance for Right Entitlement and Livelihood) Network, who had been demanding for the declaration of National Handloom Day on August 7.

"We had submitted memorandums to the union textile minister, textile secretary, and development commissioner (Handloom) on several occasions," he said adding, "We had also submitted a memorandum the textile minister here on May 12 during a meeting facilitated by former MLC and patron of Banaras Vastra Udyog Sangh Ashok Dhawan".

He said that the August 7 is an important date in the history of India's freedom, as on this very day in 1905 Mahatma Gandhi had boycotted the imported fabrics and started campaign for Swadesi fabric (Khadi). The organization has been observing the Handloom Day since 2011, he said adding, "We strongly believe that the declaration of National Handloom Day will play a vital role in the life of handloom weavers facing hardship in their daily life". The handloom is second largest employment generating sector in the country after agriculture and getting foreign revenue for the country through export, he added.
