August 18, 2015 Cotton growers in the district find themselves in a quandary due to the decline in prices.

At the Anthiyur Regulated Market the price has been hovering around Rs. 4,000 per quintal, which is Rs. 1,000 - Rs. 1,500 lesser than last year's procurement cost, sources said.

Though not a prominent crop in Erode district, cotton is cultivated in Bhavani, Sathyamangalam, Gobichettipalayam and Anthiyur areas in the district.

At the start of the year, there was demand for cotton from North Indian millers who prefer Tamil Nadu cotton for its quality.

But, the demand has declined.

The buying of cotton by mills in South India has also gone down considerably, sources said.
