May 15, 2022 Surat: A group of textile weaving unit owners met city police commissioner Ajay Tomar on Saturday and made a representation to minister of state for home Harsh Sanghavi through video conference. They demanded action in the alleged fraud of Rs 20 crore.
The weavers demanded strict action against two key textile traders who made purchases in the past 12 months but did not make payments. The traders were operating from Global Textile Market in Varachha and were part of a gang that made purchases on credit with plans to cheat the weaving units, they alleged.
Initially, a total of 158 weaving unit owners had claimed that they were cheated but finally 139 came forward to lodge a complaint. “The total amount is around Rs 20 crore,” said a weaving unit owner.
The weaving unit owners requested Sanghavi to plan a policy to check cheating with textile traders. Though the Economic Offence Cell was there, cheating cases in the textile market were taking place, they said.
“We are collecting details about the fraud. The process to register the offence is continuing,” said an officer of Varachha police station.
